UKAEA Group Structure
The UKAEA Group is internationally renowned for its work in nuclear decommissioning and fusion energy research. The Group comprises three separate entities.
The original UK Atomic Energy Authority now has a new subsidiary company, UKAEA, providing nuclear clean-up services under contract in both the UK and overseas. This company is responsible, through a further subsidiary company, Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd (DSRL), for the decommissioning of Dounreay, on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.
The UK Atomic Energy Authority, as originally created by statute, continues to encompass:
- the centre of UK fusion research, located at our Culham site in Oxfordshire, where we also operate the Joint European Torus (JET) on behalf of our partners in the European Fusion Development Agency;
- the decommissioning activities undertaken on behalf of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority at Harwell in Oxfordshire and Winfrith in Dorset, which will be combined early in 2009 into a new subsidiary company called Research Sites Restoration Ltd (RSRL);
- our interest in the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, where we have formed a joint venture with the Science and Technology and Facilities Council and Goodman International, to bring together public sector research and business to develop an international centre for science, technology and innovation; and
- corporate governance and the provision of relevant services. In addition to support for the Board and Executive, this includes Group-wide IT services, records management, legal and other key support activities.
The UKAEA subsidiary commenced operating from April 2008, with registered offices at Manor Court in Oxfordshire, and provides a range of nuclear focused expertise. This includes decommissioning, remediation, waste management, environmental services and strategic planning and programme management.
DSRL also commenced operating from April 2008 and delivers the Dounreay decommissioning programme under contract to the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.
